Why Australia's road death toll has plateaued

The death toll on Australia's roads won't drop any lower unless a new approach goes beyond the traditional 'fatal five' strategy, a road safety expert has predicted.

Government data crunched by nine.com.au shows just how dramatically deaths on Australian roads have fallen in the past 30 years, thanks to policing, driver education and advances in engineering.

But Professor Paul Salmon, director of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at University of the Sunshine Coast, said the death toll had now plateaued and won't budge without a significant change that could save many lives each year.
